“Constructions of Truths” at MCAD

Constructions of Truths asks us to reflect on the truths of images which populate our everyday lives and how these affect how we view the world. To parse truthiness to reveal the conditions of truth in media, government, nonfiction, and elsewhere. Artists included in the show present work using the projected image as a metaphor for how images are projected on us as viewers and how artists, through formal, aesthetic and narrative spaces, question these constructions.

'Cue From Life Itself' reflects on the instinctive way Filipino artists make do and dream up, transforming everyday forms with intuition and insight, and in their critical awareness of the material conditions of their milieu and ecology. Curated by art historian and scholar Patrick D. Flores, the title is lifted from a monograph by artist, educator, and cultural advocate Brenda Fajardo, who frames the concept of 'aesthetics of poverty' through the artist’s responsiveness to an encompassing but transformable world.

The title of the exhibition is lifted from one of the alternative English titles of the critically acclaimed cinematic masterpiece "Maynila Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag" (1975) by Lino Brocka which was beautifully shot neorealist-style by Mike de Leon and was based on a novel by Edgardo M. Reyes.
