"The City Who Had Two Navels”, Philippine Pavilion at the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018 is returning home. Inspired by the novel “The Woman Who Had Two Navels” (1961) by National Artist for Literature Nick Joaquin, the exhibition highlights two “navels” that are in constant dialogue: the forces of colonialism and neoliberalism as shapers of the Philippine built environment.

Normal scheduling will resume shortly engages with the arteries which make our cities run, both visible and invisible. Taking Manila and Melbourne as its departure points this exhibition ruminates on how we think, use and engage with networks and arterials, asking us to consider how we might understand these through poetic frameworks. Poklong Anading (Manila) and Neil Fettling (Melbourne) engage with the histories and the flotsam and jetsam that patinas the road and the city exploring through individual and collaborative works arterials as sites of congestion, engagement and performance and a palimpsest of private and public moments.

A new exhibition is opening at the National Museum of Fine Arts entitled Quadrícula (HOCUS II), which refers to the grid pattern used by the Spanish conquerors to lay out towns where Christianized Indios were forced to settle, beginning late 16th century. The quadrícula, represented the Spanish conquest of the Philippines. The HOCUS II are Hofileñas’ visions of the religious, political and socioeconomic consequences of Spanish rule and how the Filipino Indios coped with it.

Artists Ramon Diaz, Juerg Casserini, and Cesar Caballero come together in a group show titled “Fluctuat”, which came forth as a result of years of collaboration. With the definition of the word “fluctuare” in mind, the trio of artists explore the idea of the human being continuously rocked by the daily motion of life: through migrations, transformations, advances, and unforeseen events.

For her solo exhibition Fields of Color, textile artist Olivia d’Aboville crafts stunning canvasses comprising large swathes of bold, solid color made out of handwoven abaca and polyester textiles sourced from Cebu. Inspired by the works of the American color field movement of the 50s and early 60s, the artist deviates ever so slightly from her usual neutral, monochromatic palette, preferring a more lively and vibrant color scheme for her signature abaca works this time around.
