“Quadrícula (HOCUS II): The Hofileña-Custodio Paintings” at The National Museum of Fine Arts

A new exhibition is opening at the National Museum of Fine Arts entitled Quadrícula (HOCUS II), which refers to the grid pattern used by the Spanish conquerors to lay out towns where Christianized Indios were forced to settle, beginning late 16th century. The quadrícula, represented the Spanish conquest of the Philippines. The HOCUS II are Hofileñas’ visions of the religious, political and socioeconomic consequences of Spanish rule and how the Filipino Indios coped with it.

In 1919, a young Filipina from Sibonga, Cebu who went to America to study Radio, auditioned and landed a bit role in a major silent film made in San Francisco. By the 1920s, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Los Angeles Times, and the newspapers all over the US hailed Elena Jurado as “the only Filipino who has risen to the ranks of principal in American Cinema,” after her appearance in “White Hands” where she played the role of an Arabian girl who served and danced in a cafe.

"Hidalgo captures the layers of human activity that have once existed and gone through San Francisco earthquakes and evictions due to urban renewal, but also carefully reveals through these ephemeral gestures that at some point, another layer of existence will eventually overstep and create formal scales of layer intervals in geologic time."

In music, to transpose is to shift a melody to another key, without changing its overall structure. In Transposition, Jerome Choco recasts iconic scenes in works by the Old Masters, restaging them as minute moments in the lives of band members, himself included: cleaning instruments, resting, youthful buffoonery. In doing so he transposes music to visual arts, Orient to Occident, present to past, emerging to canonical.
