“Quadrícula (HOCUS II): The Hofileña-Custodio Paintings” at The National Museum of Fine Arts

A new exhibition is opening at the National Museum of Fine Arts entitled Quadrícula (HOCUS II), which refers to the grid pattern used by the Spanish conquerors to lay out towns where Christianized Indios were forced to settle, beginning late 16th century. The quadrícula, represented the Spanish conquest of the Philippines. The HOCUS II are Hofileñas’ visions of the religious, political and socioeconomic consequences of Spanish rule and how the Filipino Indios coped with it.

Curated by BAP's Artistic Director Inti Guerrero, this exhibition of absurd tragicomedies associates two formally distinctive practices that nevertheless each engage with the idiom of Social Realism, a prominent language in the art histories of both Eastern Europe and the Philippines.

The Japan Foundation, Philippine Contemporary Art Network, and University of the Philippines Vargas Museum present the culmination of the 2018 Curatorial Development Workshop. Constructions of Truths asks us to reflect on the truths of images which populate our everyday lives and how these affect how we view the world. To parse truthiness to reveal the conditions of truth in media, government, nonfiction, and elsewhere. Artists included in the show present work using the projected image as a metaphor for how images are projected on us as viewers and how artists, through formal, aesthetic and narrative spaces, question these constructions.
